Hogbetsotso - Day of Crossing Over

A world premier by C.K. Ladzekpo through the Hewlett 50 Arts Commission

Kaxoxowo nu wo gbea yeyeawo do – By the example of old ropes we learn to weave new ones. Anlo Ewe Proverb.

The atmosphere was electric as we warmly welcomed both familiar faces and new friends to the Center for three extraordinary presentations of Dr. CK Ladzekpo’s original West African dance and drumming production, ‘Hogbetsotso: Day of Crossing Over.’ The Center was filled with newfound energy and jubilation, as we witnessed our largest audience turnout in over three years! This immersive production, conceived by the renowned West African choreographer and master drummer CK Ladzekpo, reimagines the Festival Hogbetsotso Za—a traditionally week-long festival and ritual celebrated by the Anlo-Ewe people of West Africa—into an enthralling evening-length performance. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Dr. CK Ladzekpo for gracing us with his vision, mastery, and wisdom. It was truly an honor to present another one of his extraordinary masterpieces.

Our weekend kicked off on Friday evening with a performance dedicated to Center students and families. The following Saturday and Sunday were filled with joy as we welcomed the public.

Our deepest thanks to all of the performers who shared their artistry with us. Many of the performers in the show were East Bay Center Alumni and Faculty. It was great to see so many Center alumni back on our stage and working behind the scenes!

This production would not have been possible without the unwavering support of volunteers. We are so thankful for each and every one of you for generously offering your time and expertise to bring this event to life. A special shout-out goes to Kristin Leimkhuler for volunteering her time and skills to manage the entire production! We would also like to express our deep appreciation to the Hewlett 50 Commissions in Folk and Traditional Arts for providing the funding for this project. Lastly, our profound gratitude to our audience for showing up with enthusiasm, support and love, it was an honor to welcome you into our home!
