On March 3rd, one of the Center's fourth year Young Artist Diploma Students, Pinkie Young, received the highest award (superior command performance) from the California Music Educators Association. She played a piece by Telemann on flute.

Young Artist Diploma Student and drummer/percussionist David “Kofi” Williams was chosen to attend a 5-week Summer Intensive at Berklee College of Music in Boston on scholarship. East Bay Center graduate and drummer Malachi Whitson, was chosen to attend the prestigious Brubeck Institute Fellowship program this fall. The Brubeck Fellowship Program is a one or two-year full-scholarship program in jazz performance for five musicians who have just graduated from high school. These are the Brubeck Fellows and they comprise the Brubeck Institute Jazz Quintet (BIJQ). The Brubeck Fellows are students pursuing careers in jazz performance, and are selected during auditions held annually at Yoshi's Jazz Club in Oakland, CA. More information

East Bay Center for the Performing Arts was recently awarded the Japanese American Confinement Sites Grant from the National Park Service. The grant is for the documentary film project, "Hidden Legacy: Japanese Performing Arts in World War II Internment Camps."

East Bay Center’s Artistic Director, Jordan Simmons, has been awarded the 2011 Community Leadership Award, by the San Francisco Foundation. The San Francisco Foundation Community Leadership Awards recognize individuals and organizations whose leadership has made a significant impact in their particular Bay Area communities. Jordan will be honored on Tuesday, September 27, 2011 at the Foundation’s Awards Celebration at Herbst Theater in San Francisco, along with award winners John Santos, musician and cultural activist, Gonzalo Rucobo, executive director of Bay Area Peacekeeps, Reverend Yvette Flunder, director of Ark of Refuge, and Ravenswood Family Health Center.

East Bay Center receives an “Our Town” Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to commission an interactive art installation by new media artist Scott Snibbe, which will feature professionally choreographed and video-recorded movements of Richmond youth, reflecting both the diversity of the local population and the multicultural dance, rhythm, and performance programs taught and performed at the Center.
