COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

Songwriting 101

In Songwriting 101 we will learn all about the creative processes of songwriting. From song form to lyric writing and making beats with loops to recording vocals and experimenting with playing instruments... this innovative class will get everyone up and creating!

Chorus

We will write, sing and make music in this course.

Recorder

Learning to play the recorder is an excellent way for children to discover music.  Studies have shown that even a small exposure to music lessons as a child creates neural circuits that enhance musical enjoyment later in life.  Classes are small (4-6 students per class) and students will learn the basics of reading music and playing in an ensemble in a fun and supportive class situation.  Beginning and continuing students are welcome.

Yoga

Introduce your child to the wonders of yoga. This class, designed for children will:

- Teach kids to experience being in their bodies, joyfully with excitement and control.

-Introduce breath work as a tool for behavior modification. (" I can take a deep breath to calm myself")

- Teach kids about macrocosm through microcosm in simple terms.

- Use nature as a teaching tool - we often become animals or states or weather.

- Encourage the kids to observe with their whole body, and practice sitting in stillness.

- Empower them with a new skill to share at home with siblings and parents

We have serious FUN in this yoga class! We experience first hand that yoga can be challenging and silly at the same time.  Jnana, a teacher of children for 9 years, is able to read the energy of the room and direct the class in a way that works best for that day.   As an instructor she acknowledges each child so s/he feels seen, fostering self-confidence. Please visit www.powerhed.com or call 510-734-4122 for more information.

Hip Hop:

Students are introduced to different styles of Hip Hop.  Students refine their sense of rhythm, expand their knowledge of repertoire and gain enhanced control of their movements.

Intro Guitar

Learn guitar in a relaxed setting. Students will

quickly learn fundamentals such as chords, note names, and tuning. We

will also work on the correct ways to hold the instrument as well as

basic strumming patterns. No previous musical experience necessary. If

the student has some knowledge of guitar, we will build on any

fundamentals the student may already know and include scales, more

complex repertoire, theory, and improvisation.

Group Songwriting

Learn the fundamentals of songwriting in a fun

group setting. We'll work on rhyming, identifying parts of songs

including verse, chorus, and the bridge. We'll work on rhythm and

melody writing. The course will also explore vocabulary, and cover

basic literary concepts around the various themes found in different

types of songwriting. As a class we will craft our own original songs

and perform them for each other.

Engineering

Each day in this class offers an engineering project for students to explore. Key engineering principles and some guided practice are introduced at the beginning of class, but most of the time is spent designing, testing, and building. Craft wood, wheels, rubber bands, and propellers are some of the materials that students will use to build helicopters, cars, and catapults. Many of the projects use small hot glue guns. Hands-on projects, boosting critical thinking skills, and having a blast is what this class is all about. Best of all, students get to take home everything they make!

Please visit www.TheWYE.com.

Tennis

Engage in fun exercises and activities to learn the basic skills of the game of tennis.

Voice: Songs of Disney

This class will have fun watching and learning famous songs from the

Walt Disney catalog.  This class will also explore basic voice technique and musicianship.

Voice: Jazz

This class will use the magical Jazz coloring book

to learn about great American Jazz Icons.

The students will also explore basic Jazz vocals, technique and musicianship.

Musical Theater

The Musical Theater class will meet for about 10 times during this session. At the end of the session the student will participate in a presentation and perform scenes from familiar musicals.  While working on their presentation the students will practice the following skills: Teamwork, singing, dancing, stage confidence and speech annunciation.

Introduction to Ukulele

The ukulele is a member of the guitar family and was originated in Hawaii. Because it has only four strings it is fairly easy to strum chords. Once the student learn three basic chords, she or he can accompany hundreds of American and international folk songs. The students also learn about the steady beat, the tempo, singing on pitch, teamwork and how to tune and care for the instrument. At the end of the session the students will perform singing and accompanying themselves on the ukulele. The class is limited to 10 students.

Mosaics

Students will begin with learning basic design elements of mosaics.  At first, students will learn to plan and sketch ideas and create mosaics from paper.  Painting, drawing, planning and sketching skills will be developed.  Successful designs will be used to create finished mosaics with pebbles and glass mosaic tiles.

Clay

Clay is an important element for developing a child’s imagination. Exploring the world of clay creation is what this class is about. Students will learn methods of construction, design, decoration and hand building. They will create assigned projects as well as have plenty of free clay fantasy time. Children work with different types of clay such as modeling clay, air dry clay and Happy clay.
